Flat Lithium Polymer Battery Materials Composition

Flat lithium polymer battery is composed of cathode material, anode material, electrolyte system, separator film, and aluminum-plastic composite pouch. The cathode layer is typically made of lithium cobalt oxide or ternary lithium metal oxides coated on aluminum foil. The anode layer uses artificial graphite coated on copper foil to form a stable intercalation structure. The electrolyte is a lithium salt such as LiPF6 dissolved in organic carbonate solvents, forming an ion-conductive medium. The separator is a microporous polymer film (PE/PP multilayer) designed to maintain ionic transfer while preventing electrode contact. The external structure uses laminated aluminum-plastic film to form a sealed flat pouch cell.

Electrode Manufacturing and Coating Process

Electrode production begins with slurry mixing, where active materials, conductive carbon, and polymer binders are evenly dispersed. The slurry is then coated onto metal foil substrates using precision comma blade or slot-die coating equipment. After coating, the electrodes undergo multi-stage drying in controlled ovens to remove residual solvents. Calendaring is applied to compress electrode density and ensure uniform thickness. The coated electrodes are then slit into required widths for subsequent cell assembly.

Cell Assembly and Flat Pouch Formation

Flat lithium polymer cells adopt a stacking or winding process depending on design specification. In pouch-type flat cells, electrodes and separators are stacked in alternating layers and ultrasonically welded or tab-welded to form current collectors. The assembly is then placed into an aluminum-plastic laminate pouch. Electrolyte injection is performed under vacuum conditions to ensure full wetting of electrodes. The pouch is subsequently sealed using heat sealing technology to maintain internal isolation.

Technical Standards and Quality Requirements

Manufacturing and testing follow international lithium battery standards including IEC 62133, UN38.3 transport safety regulation, and IEC 61960 for performance evaluation. Quality control includes dimensional inspection, leakage detection, insulation resistance testing, and charge-discharge cycling validation. Electrical parameters such as charge cut-off voltage (4.2V), discharge cut-off voltage (around 2.5–3.0V depending on specification), and discharge rate capability (commonly 0.5C–1C continuous) are strictly verified. Environmental testing includes vibration, thermal shock, and high-temperature storage to ensure structural and electrochemical consistency under regulated conditions.
